[British merchant sea captain and adventurer (ca1682-1742); made several
voyages to Africa and the WI; later deputy-governor of St Lucia. In 1722 the Duke of Montagu received a
grant of St Lucia and St Vincent. He appointed Uring deputy-governor of his new
lands and sent him with a large flotilla to colonise the islands. The French demanded that he withdraw from St
Lucia and threatened to land troops if he failed to do so. Unable to secure backing from British
warships in the region, Uring and his settlers evacuated St Lucia. His
“Relation” is his account of the events of 1722. RES.]
