Reprinted from “The Independent Whig” of 15 December 1816.
By an ex-clerk in the Navy Victualling and Pay
Office; one of the defendants in a stock market fraud trial in England in 1814
along with Thomas, Lord Cochrane and
his uncle, Andrew Cochrane Johnstone, one time Governor of Dominica and others.
This pamphlet was no doubt an attempt by Butt to flush out Johnstone
after he (Johnstone) without
facing trial, fled to the West Indies having
ruined Butt and his own nephew. Butt followed him there, but by this time
(1816) Johnstone's estates in Dominica had
been sold from underneath him for previous debts. This pamphlet may well be a
straight reprint or adaptation of Archibald
Gloster, “A Plain Narrative of Some Recent Facts
. . .” See: AC Johnstone.
